Artvi advocates will host the opening of “The Feminine Mystique: A Global Fourth Wave, Art That Reflects Women’s Lives and Experiences Around the World” from 6:30-9 p.m., June 4, at The Ice Gallery Project at St. Thomas Dairies, across from Udder Delite on Magen’s Bay Road, St. Thomas. Admission is free, and hors d’oeuvres, wine and more will be served.
For this third edition of Artvi’s Young @ heART project, the local non-profit organization and contributing artists aspire to explore the ideal of the feminine in today’s global society. Named in tribute to the late author and feminist activist, Betty Friedan, the exhibition will present a variety of works by more than 20 women.
This exhibition will be a one-of-a-kind event featuring award-winning poet, journalist, performer and activist River Huston. There will be a screening of Academy Award-winning director Pamela T. Boll’s documentary, “WHO DOES SHE THINK SHE IS?” There will also be artist Cindy Male’s ZemiZen fashion designs and Artvi’s “Feet First” audience participatory art project.

“WHO DOES SHE THINK SHE IS?” is a documentary that profiles five bold women who navigate some of the most problematic intersections of our time: parenting and creativity, partnering and independence, economics and art. Filmmaker Pamela Tanner Boll (“Born into Brothels”) explores the history of gender and art, and how art is valued in our culture.
The Young @ heART project is a new initiative designed by Artvi Advocates to connect the young at heart with the arts in the Virgin Islands. The goal is to connect art lovers, patrons and collectors who have a keen interest in furthering their knowledge of the arts, and to provide consistent financial support for the creation, exhibition, performance and proliferation of arts in the Virgin Islands.
A percentage of the proceeds of the artwork sales will go towards the newly established “Artvi Arts Education Fund” to provide financial assistance to at-risk youths who wish to attend visual and performing arts classes and summer camp programs. It will also provide arts, social services, and juvenile justice programs with best practice models and tools to integrate arts programming for at-risk youth in the Virgin Islands. Artvi Advocates believes that art programs have a measurable impact on youth at risk in deterring delinquent behavior and truancy problems, promoting more pro-social behavior, and improving communications skills with peers and adults.
