St. Thomas Fishermen Awarded Grant to Study Yellowtail Snapper

The St. Thomas Fishermen’s Association (STFA) announces it has received notification that its study of growth, movement and mortality of yellowtail snapper has been approved for $132,850 in funding. The study, which is collaboration between the STFA and Dr. Adrian Jordan will involve tagging 4,000 fish with electronic tags and observing their growth and movements while at large.
Funding comes from the Cooperative Research Program of the National Marine Fisheries Service, which is currently funding an STFA study to engineer reduction of bycatch from fish traps. That study has been underway since last September.
Julian Magras, chairman of the board for the STFA, said, "I’m very happy that this study has finally been funded. Yellowtail are an important fish in St. Thomas and the study will help us to understand how they should be managed."
