Cultural Education Awareness Entries for St. Thomas Carnival Now Being Accepted

Entries for the 2011 Virgin Islands Carnival Parades on May 6 and 7 are now being accepted for the Virgin Islands Cultural Education Awareness Award, according to a press release from the V.I. Department of Education through its Division of Cultural Education. This distinction, which originated during the early 1980s when the division was first instituted, recognizes and honors entries in local parades and other cultural events for accurately and authentically promoting V.I./Caribbean culture. Entries from schools throughout the St. Thomas-St. John School District are encouraged to compete for this award and submit a description of their entry to the division.
Gerard Emanuel, assistant director for the Division of Cultural Education, said, “This award encourages students in particular and residents in general to further utilize their research, critical and creative thinking skills when preparing entries for the various cultural events held each year.”
The Grand Prize is a $3,000 award from the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts.
Description of entries are to be submitted to the Cultural Education Division’s Office, located at the Jarvis School Annex, on St. Thomas, no later than Friday, April 29.
For more information, contact the office at 774-0100, ext. 2804, 2806 and 2809.
