The Department of Human Services Criminal Victims Compensation Commission (CVCC) will commemorate Crime Victims Rights Week from April 10-16 with a series of activities open to the public.
This year’s theme, “Reshape the Future by Honoring Our Past,” reflects the intent of the CVCC to educate the community about its services and that of other victim service agencies as well work in tandem with community stakeholders to curb the escalating violence in the territory.
• On Sunday, April 10, the second annual Race Against Crime and Violence will take place at 5 p.m. at the Ann Abrahmson Pier in Frederiksted, St. Croix. Awards will be given to top overall finishers, age group winners and special category winners. Participants are welcome to walk, jog or run. Race day registration will be open from 3-4:30 p.m. on the day of the event.
• A free Restorative Justice Symposium is scheduled for 1-4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 13, at the University of the Virgin Islands, St. Thomas campus Administration Building on the first floor. The guest speaker will be N. Saleem Hylton, a leading, internationally recognized restorative/community justice trainer and one of America’s foremost youth development experts from the D.C.-Maryland area.
• Victims of crime will be honored at a vigil entitled “Victim No
More” from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, April 15, in Cruz Bay, St. John. Various community stakeholders will host a fair to present ideas and materials to end victimization in the community and welcome discussion about issues plaguing it.
