Five Students Compete for ‘Miss UVI’ Title

Five young women will compete for the title of Miss UVI on Saturday, April 9. The Queens Selection Committee of the University of the Virgin Islands Student Government Association will host the Miss UVI Ambassadorial Competition at 7 p.m. in the Island Center for the Performing Arts on St. Croix.
Tickets are $25, $20 and $15, and can be purchased at the UVI Bookstores on UVI’s St. Croix and St. Thomas campuses, as well as at Jackie’s Beauty Supply on St. Croix.
UVI students Daniella Henry, Danielle Christian, Briana Henley, Shari Chryss Alfred and Shamelle Farrington are vying for the 2011-2012 title.
Miss UVI serves as a goodwill ambassador for the university. This role includes, but is not limited to, participation in UVI’s recruitment efforts, representing the university locally and abroad, as well as maintaining a highly visible role on UVI’s St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses.
Contestant No. 1 is Daniella Henry, a 21 year-old senior and a Thurgood Marshall Leadership Scholar. Henry is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority who hopes to one day be elected to represent St. Croix in the V.I. Legislature.
Contestant No. 2 is 21 year-old Danielle Christian, a senior who bears the distinction of being the first four-year Army ROTC scholarship recipient in the V.I.
Contestant No. 3 is UVI junior Briana Henley, a 19 year-old Elementary Education major from the island of Tortola. Henley transferred to UVI from H. Lavity Stoutt Community College.
Contestant No. 4 is Shari Alfred, a sophomore majoring in communications with a minor in criminal justice. Alfred hopes to one day be a communications professor and a member of the V.I. Auxiliary Police force.
Contestant No. 5 is UVI junior Shamelle Farrington. A nursing major, Farrington is intent on becoming a registered nurse and continuing her studies abroad. A former Miss Addelita Cancryn Junior High School, she won the Junior Calypso Monarch title five times.
Individuals interested in travelling to St. Croix to attend the competition are asked to sign up at the UVI Bookstore on the St. Thomas campus. Tickets for the chartered ferry are $60.
