UVI Spring Student Research Symposium Winners Announced

The winners of the 2011 Spring Student Research Symposium held on March 12 have been announced by the UVI College of Science and Mathematics and the Emerging Caribbean Scientists Program. There were 38 registered participants. This was the first time that graduate students presented their research at the symposium, which was held on the St. Croix campus. The winners will receive certificates at the UVI’s Spring Academic Awards Ceremony scheduled for April 17.
The winners are:
Kenya Emanuel – Undergraduate First Time Presenter: First Place
Mentor: Dr. Thomas W. Zimmerman, UVI Agricultural Experiment Station
Poster Title: Influence of Extraction Solvent on Anthocyanin Concentration in Sorrel
Jan Alexis Barry – Undergraduate Experienced Presenter: First Place
Mentors: Steve Arnott and Bill Roumillat, University of South Carolina
Poster Title: Parasitic burden of the American eel, Anguilla rostrata by Anguillicoloides crassus in two estuaries of South Carolina
Odari Thomas and Stella Jarvis (team) – Undergraduate Experienced Presenter: Second Place
Mentor: Dr. Robert Stolz, College of Science and Mathematics, UVI
Poster Title: Generative Models using Cellular Automata [Preliminary Study]
Bryan Legare and Christopher Richard Loeffler (tie) – Graduate Student Presenter Award: First Place
Bryan Legare’s Mentors: Dr. Richard Nemeth, Center for Marine and Environmental Studies, UVI; Dr. Greg Skomal, Massachusetts Department of Marine Fisheries; Bryan DeAngelis, NOAA Restoration Program
Poster Title: Site fidelity, residency time and movement of juvenile Blacktip sharks (Carcharhinus limbatus) and juvenile Lemon sharks (Negaprion brevirostris) within nursery areas of St John, USVI.
Christopher Richard Loeffler’s Mentors: Dr. Tyler B. Smith, Research Assistant Professor UVI, Dr. Mindy Richlen Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
Poster Title: The interactions of depth, grazing and addition of nutrients on the abundance and distribution of Gambierdiscus spp
