West Indian antiques
“Visit the Historical Trust Museum”
St. Thomas Historical Trust has a museum/office located just off Norre Gade and on the western edge of the Franklin D. Roosevelt Veterans Park. Currently on display at the museum is a fine collection of West Indian antiques from the collection of the late dentist Dr. Gerhardt Sprauve. The collection is on loan to the trust by the heirs of Sprauve, and it honors the patriarch of their family. The showpiece of the collection is a bedroom suite, featuring a magnificent mahogany four poster bed. The bed has a stylized headboard and foot rail, with fine mahogany crotch marks and rope turnings, urns and rings in the massive post mastiff. In addition there are items from other island residents. The trust’s museum is now open for locals and tourists alike. We have docents on hand to give a guided tour from 10-3 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays.
Additional docents are needed, so if that is something you would like to do, please call board member Bernice A. Turnbull at 775-6782.
Did you know… We sell items in our museum; like polo shirts, T-shirts, caps, canvas bags, calendars, and DVDs of the history of Hassel Island. More items like: historic style furniture, historic books, historic photos and prints will be added as we get the downstairs room ready for use as our museum store.
Upcoming events… Saturday, Feb. 26: we will have a booth at the Black History program at the TuTu Park Mall; Sunday Feb. 27: a conversation about UP STREET with Myron Jackson; Wednesday March 9: Step Street tour for Antilles students; sometime in late March: Transfer Project with Janet Cook-Rutnik; Sunday April 10: a lecture with Betsy Rezende and Anne Walbom on social and economic conditions of St. Croix and St. Thomas-St. John by looking closely on the kinds of occupations in the islands; Thursday May 26: Chamber After Hours.
Our mission is to identify, protect, and preserve the historical identity, structures, sites, and cultural heritage of St. Thomas through education, advocacy and promotion.
