Cape Air Named Official Airline of Caribbean Ocean Racing Circuit, P.R. Heineken Regatta

Cape Air’s commitment to getting sailors where they want to race continues and expands this year with sponsorship of the Cape Air Caribbean Ocean Racing Circuit (C.O.R.C.), a four-event series that includes the traditional Caribbean Ocean Racing Triangle regattas plus welcomes back St. Thomas’ International Rolex Regatta. The Hyannis, Massachusetts-based regional airline, whose Caribbean route took flight in 1998, is also the official airline of the Puerto Rico Heineken International Regatta.
Dave Bushy, president of Cape Air, said, “We are very proud to be a repeat sponsor of the Caribbean Ocean Racing Circuit. It is a natural fit for us, and we are honored to be involved because it is such an expansive series that touches a good portion of the Caribbean communities that Cape Air has been serving for almost 15 years.”
The Regattas and Destinations The Cape Air C.O.R.C. starts with the St. Croix Yacht Club Hospice Regatta, Feb. 11-13, out of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands.
“The organizers of the St. Croix Yacht Club Hospice Regatta are elated to be the kickoffevent of the Cape Air C.O.R.C. Commodore Alan Mallory graciously invites you to join us on February 11-13, for Jump Up Celebration in Christiansted, the Cruzan Rum Party at the Club and competitive racing in the beautiful waters of St. Croix,” said Vicki Bandola, regatta director.
The series continues with the Puerto Rico Heineken International Regatta, March 18 to 20.
“We welcome sailors to this most fun and prestigious sailing event in the Caribbean and to the Cape Air C.O.R.C,” says regatta director Angel Ayala. “We are pleased to announce that this year’s Puerto Rico Heineken International Regatta will once again be held out of beautiful Palmas del Mar in Humacao. In addition to big boat racing, we’ll have our dinghy regatta and for the first-time a stand-up paddle boarding exhibition on the final day.”
The International Rolex Regatta, March 25-27, is the series third leg.
“The International Rolex Regatta is thrilled to be a part of the Cape Air C.O.R.C. once again,” says regatta director Bill Canfield. “We believe it will benefit all the events and also give many sailors an added reason to participate in our regatta. Where else in the world will you find a series of events with our weather and breeze in such a short period of time?”
The British Virgin Islands (BVI) Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival, March 28 to April 3 out of Nanny Cay Marina on Tortola, is the fourth and final leg of the series.
"The BVI Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival depend on Cape Air to bring sailors to the BVI for our event, and we are especially grateful for their support of our event and the C.O.R.C.,” says Bob Phillips, regatta chairman. “Ease of transportation between islands has been a key ingredient of our growth and success at becoming the darling of the Caribbean regattas."
How to register: Sailors can register for the Cape Air C.O.R.C. either in St. Croix or Puerto Rico. The entry fee is $75 per boat, which includes a C.O.R.C.-logo bag, captain’s long sleeve T-shirt, and captain’s hat.
Yachts must participate in at least three regattas – one in the U.S. Virgin Islands, one in Puerto Rico and one in the BVI – to be eligible for raffle drawings and prizes. Additional prizes will be awarded for yachts that compete in all four regattas.
Classes include Racing A, Racing B, Racer-Cruiser, Performance-Cruiser, IC24s, and Jib and Main. There will also be a Beach Cat class if a minimum of five boats register. Great prizes make it well worth it to enter the Cape C.O.R.C. There are two ways to win.
First, in St. Croix, Puerto Rico and St. Thomas there will be a raffle among series entrants for a round-trip ticket for one to anywhere that the Caribbean Cape Air flies.
Second, in the final awards in Tortola, first place winners in each class will receive a round-trip ticket for one to anywhere in the Caribbean that Cape Air flies. Yachts that compete in all four Cape Air C.O.R.C. regattas will receive foul-weather gear.
Cape Air offers convenient and reliable hourly flights that make travel between Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, St. Croix, Tortola, Vieques and Anguilla easier than ever.
The airline also offers special joint fares and convenient connections with major airlines, making it easier for sailors anywhere in the world to get to their favorite Caribbean destination.
