Hawks Defeat Rays in Varsity Baseball, 9-4

The 2010 Interscholastic Athletic Association Varsity Baseball defending champions Charlotte Amalie High School Chicken Hawks soared over the Ivanna Eudora Kean Devil Rays Wednesday at Lionel Roberts Stadium, 9-4. The Hawks held the Rays scoreless in the top of the first inning. The Hawks scored five runs on three hits, and they were help by three walks by Rays’ starting pitcher Shamoi Samuel.
In that inning, the Hawks had one runner on with two outs; then the flood gates opened. Samuel walked the Hawks’ clean-up hitter Troy Richards. Frank Thomas then singled in N’Kai Dowe for the first run of the game. Dalwin Rojas then followed with a single that scored Richards. The next batter, Shaquan Webster, reached on an error that scored Thomas. J’Moi Smith plated the fourth and fifth runs of the inning with a double.
The Hawks added a single run in the second and two runs in the fourth to build an 8-0 lead.
The Rays’ offense came alive in the top of the fifth inning. Jared Hanley led off the inning with a walk. Aseah Thomas and Yohance Henley followed with a single and a walk respectively. Thomas’ single scored Hanley who had stolen second base to put himself in scoring position. Emari Mills then doubled on Thomas and Henley. Hawks’ relief pitcher Malachia Fredricks then struck out the next two batters, Raheem Malone and Samuel, before Rakim Fahie reached on an error that allowed Mills to score the fourth Rays’ run.
The Hawks were able to add an additional run in the bottom of the fifth as the two-hour time limit came to end the game.
Malik Mitchel picked up the victory for the Hawks pitching three innings, allowing two hits and striking out five. Rojas had two hits in two plate appearances, and J’Vaughn Walwyn had two hit in four plate appearances.
The Rays’ had five hits from five different batters.
