Franzi Siggelkow Coulianos Dies at 90

Franzi Siggelkow Coulianos
Franzi Siggelkow Coulianos died peacefully at her home on Monday morning Jan. 31. She was 90 years “young." She is survived by her daughter, Katina E. Coulianos; son-in-law, Douglas E. Sell; grandsons: Lane D. Sell and Nathan E. Sell of St. Thomas; and cousin, Paulina Jensen of St. Croix. The funeral service will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 2, at the St. Thomas Synagogue on Crystal Gade in Charlotte Amalie. Internment will follow at the Hebrew Congregation’s Altona Cemetery on the Harwood Highway.
Coulianos was born in Hamburg, Germany, on Oct. 20, 1920, the second daughter of Franz Siggelkow and Else Siggelkow, nee Levin. Her father was an engineer and her mother worked at home. After her husband’s untimely death, Mrs. Siggelkow relocated to her family home on St. Thomas with her daughters Gertrude and Franzi. They lived with Mrs. Siggelkow’s parents, Israel and Victoria Levin. Franzi Coulianos graduated from Charlotte Amalie High School in 1938 and went to work in the family business. She married Greek Merchant Marine sea captain Costas H. Coulianos in 1944. They had two children, Harry and Katina.
She was well-known as the proprietor of I. Levin Store, a career and location that were dear to her heart. She was a very social person, and the store enabled her to see many people whom she knew growing up and working in the community. Until later years, she was an active member of the Hebrew Congregation and its Sisterhood, and served as Sisterhood president. That organization honored her as “Person of the Year” in 2007. She shared an appreciation of Rotary and its principles with her husband, and she participated in Rotary and Inner Wheel Club activities.
She was predeceased by her sister, Gertrude, husband, Costas, and son, Harry.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hebrew Congregation of St. Thomas Cemetery Fund (Box 266, St. Thomas, VI 00804) or to “God’s Love We Deliver,” a non-profit organization that delivers hot meals to terminally ill persons in the New York area (166 Avenue of the Americas, New York, NY 10013).
Expressions of sympathy may be mailed to P.O. Box 236, St. Thomas, VI 00804. Funeral arrangements are by Davis Funeral Home.
