The defending champion Seaborne Stealers extended their 2011 unbeaten streak in the Bob Owens Slow Pitch Softball League by crushing the cellar-dwelling Dirty Dozen, 17-1, in Tuesday’s late game.
The Stealers have now reeled off five straight victories, which included wins against the top three teams in the league, since play resumed after the festival break.
Also coming away with victories on Tuesday were the Coolers, who outlasted Set It Off, 24-13, in game one; and the Diageo Hummers, who edged Softball Inc., 16-13, in game two.
Stealers 17, Dirty Dozen 1
The champs have been on a roll since suffering a humiliating defeat to Diageo Hummers last year, and the Dirty Dozen was just another small bump in the road Tuesday on the Stealers’ march to what they hope to be back-to-back championships. They wasted little time in pummeling the Dozen squad, 17-1, in four innings via the 15-run mercy rule.
The Stealers finished with 17 runs on 12 hits and three errors, while the Dozen plated one run on four hits. Stealers ace Samuel Ramos scattered four hits in picking up the win on the hill, and Steve Nisky got the loss.
Top batters for the winners were Cruz Soto (3 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs) and Raymond Cintron (3 for 3 with a home run and six home RBIs). For the Dirty Dozen, Jason Roberts was 1 for 2 with an RBI.
Coolers 24, Set It Off 13
In game one on Tuesday, the Coolers got by Set It Off easily. It was the Coolers with 24 runs on 17 hits and two errors, while Set It Off finished with 13 runs on 13 hits and four errors. The winning pitcher was Dexter DeSouza, while Julio Carmona got the loss.
Top batters for the Coolers were David Gonzalez (3 for 3 with a home run and one RBI) and Eric Perez (2 for 2 with a home run and five RBIs). For Set It Off, Carmona was 3 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs, and David Pierre was 2 for 2 with a home run and two RBIs.
Hummers 16, Softball Inc. 13
The Diageo Hummers surprised league-leading Softball Inc., 16-13, in the best matchup of the night. Jerry Vialet, the Hummers’ number-one pitcher and arguably one of the best in the league, shut down the powerful Softball Inc. lineup in the last few innings to help his team preserve the narrow victory.
It was the Hummers with 16 runs on 14 hits and three errors, while Softball Inc. finished with 13 runs on 12 hits and three errors. Cody St. Pierre got the loss. Top batters for the winners were Neal Davis (3 for 4 with a home run and one RBI) and Colin Williams (2 for 4 with a home run and one RBI).
For Softball Inc., Antonio Cruz was 3 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs, and Adam Harris was 2 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs.
