Woman Arrested for Worthless Checks

Detectives from the Criminal Investigation Bureau on St. Thomas arrested 43-year-old Karen Encarnacion Tuesday, charging her with drawing and delivering worthless checks.

According to the police reports, a representative of Shay’s Boutique in Christiansted on St. Croix reported Encarnacion purchased $370 in merchandise from the boutique in May 2007 with a bounced check.

Officers made contact with Encarnacion who promised to pay the money but left the island the same year.

Tuesday U.S. Customs and Borders Protection officers at the Cyril E. King Airport detained Encarnacion as she was about to board her flight to Maryland and notified the police department. She was arrested at about 4 p.m. the same day and charged with Grand Larceny.

Bail was set at $10,000 and she was remanded to the Bureau of Corrections pending further court action.
