‘It’s a Man Thing’ Exhibit Celebrates Male Artists at Danica Gallery

by Elwin JosephLocal artists Krishna Banwaree Jr. and Elwin Joseph will be showcasing their artworks in an exhibit entitled “It’s a Man Thing” at Danica Art Gallery in Christiansted. The opening reception will be held from 5-9 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 20. Banwaree and Joseph’s works will be on display through February. The exhibit recognizes the talents of two significant Caribbean male artists that have contributed to Virgin Islands art history. “Several years ago I recognized talented female artists in an exhibit called "It’s a Woman Thing. Since then I wanted to recognize talented male artists,” stated Danica David, the owner of the gallery.
Krishna Banwaree Jr. is a native of St. Croix, born in 1978 of artistic parents. He became president of the National Art Honors Society at Central High School from which he graduated in 1997. He has won many awards, including three months of conceptual training at UVI on St. Thomas through Upward Bound, and, most notably, a first place award to attend an internationally recognized internship noted for excellence in figure drawing. He attended the Interlochen Fine Arts School in Michigan; where he received formal art training.
Banwaree considers art a spiritual work inspired by people, places and things. He is particularly influenced by the works of many famous local artists such as Lloyd “Dove” Braffith. He shares the creative energy of his mind, eyes and hands to communicate a network of silent messages through various mediums such as oil, watercolor and acrylic. His wood carvings, portraits, natural life paintings, murals and calabash crafts have been shown and sold across the United States.
Joseph is a self-taught artist who was born on the island of Dominica and moved to St. Croix in the early 70s. He started drawing in kindergarten and has never stopped and is a graduate of St. Croix Central High School. His meticulous pencil drawings have a distinct Escher-like quality. He works in various mediums, including watercolor, pastel, pencil and charcoal.
Joseph has participated in exhibitions held at the Caribbean Museum Center for Arts, Starving Artists at Whim Plantation and at the Botanical Gardens. He participated in the Twenty-Second and Twenty-Third Annual Caribbean Fine Art Exhibit at the Good Hope School, and Artists for Animals presented by the St. Croix Sunshine Foundation. In 2008, he donated five pieces of his work to the Ricardo Richards School Library.
