After two games in the 2011 half of the Bob Owens Slow-Pitch Softball League, the defending champion Seaborne Stealers picked up where they left off at the Christmas break, crushing another of the league’s top three teams Thursday night at the D.C. Canegata Ball Park when they beat the Coolers, 18-7.
The Coolers, who handed the Stealers one of their only two losses earlier in the season, are arguably the most powerful team in the league, but they had problems all night coping with Stealers ace Sam Ramos, who turned in his second excellent pitching performance against two tough teams. Seaborne Airlines pilot and Stealers right fielder Aaron Howell’s blast over the right-field fence in the bottom of the sixth inning gave the champs the victory by way of the 10-run mercy rule.
The Stealers finished with 18 runs on 16 hits while the Coolers had seven runs on nine hits and two errors. Ramos picked up the win on the hill for the Stealers and Dexter DeSouza got the loss. Top batters for the winners were Owen Pimentel (3 for 3 with two home runs and three RBIs) and Eric Flynn (2 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs). For the Coolers, Andre Ponce and Angel Rosa were both 2 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs.
Softball Inc. 13, Set It Off 11
Softball Inc. got back on the winning track in game one Thursday, rebounding from Tuesday night’s 21-3 pounding by the Seaborne Stealers to edge Set It Off 13-11. It was Softball Inc. with 13 runs on 11 hits and two errors, while Set It Off finished with 11 runs on 13 hits and four errors.
The winning pitcher was Cody St. Pierre and Julio Carmona got the loss. Top hitters for Softball Inc. were St. Pierre (3 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs) and Angel Guzman (2 for 3 with two home runs and three RBIs). For Set it Off, Enercido Bon was 2 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs and Eleiza Ramirez was 4 for 4 with four RBIs.
Hummers 16, Cartel 7
The Diageo Hummers took full advantage of a depleted Cartel squad in game two, hammering them 15-7 in a lopsided victory. It was the Hummers with 15 runs on 14 hits and three errors while the Cartel finished with seven runs on nine hits and three errors.
Jerry Vialet got the win on the hill for the Hummers and David McFarland took the loss. Top batters for the winners were Sylvester Blake (4 for 4 with two home runs and five RBIs) and Mario Christian (2 for 4 with two home runs and four RBIs).
