Penalty and Interest Waiver for 2006 Property Taxes to End in February

Tax Collector Valencio Jackson advises Virgin Islands property owners that pursuant to Act. No. 7241, penalties and interest will be charged on the revised 2006 bills beginning Feb. 16, 2011. The revised 2006 property tax bills were issued in July 2010 and became delinquent on Nov. 15, 2010. In accordance with prior legislation, property tax payers were not required to pay any penalty and interest on the 2006R tax bills, according to a press release from the Office of the Lieutenant Governor.
Act 7241 states that: “Notwithstanding the penalty and interest provisions of Title 29 Virgin Islands Code, section 2494, no interest or penalty may be levied on any assessment for the property tax years 2006, 2007, and 2008 for six months after the date of issuance of the respective year’s tax assessment.”
Accordingly, Virgin Islands property owners are encouraged to pay their 2006 property tax bills before Feb. 16, 2011, in order to avoid the assessment of penalty and interest. After that date, penalty and interest charges will be assessed.
