A tip from a concerned citizen led to a firearm being taken off the streets of St. Thomas, the V.I. Police Department reported Thursday.
According to a statement, members of the St. Thomas Criminal Intelligence Unit arrested 28-year-old Achille A. Heywood and charged him with possession of an unlicensed firearm after a citizen told police Heywood was wearing a gun as he worked in the Berg’s Home area.
When CIU members found Heywood, they discovered that he was wearing a brown gun holster that with a .40 caliber handgun. The pistol’s serial number was obliterated, police said. Additionally, two loaded magazines – one containing 13 rounds and the other nine rounds – were also found on the suspect.
A check with the VIPD Firearm’s Bureau showed the suspect is not licensed to possess a firearm in the Virgin Islands, and he was taken into custody. Bail for Heywood was set at $25,000.00. Unable to post bail, Heywood was turned over to the Bureau of Corrections pending further court action.
