Innovative Continues Support for SAT Prep Program Offered by UVI-CELL Innovative reaffirmed its support of the SAT Prep Program offered to ninth and tenth grade students in the territory by UVI’s Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center with the presentation of a check for $26,600 on Monday, Nov. 29.
Innovative Vice President for Public Relations and Governmental Affairs Jennifer Matarangas-King made the presentation at the CELL Center on St. Thomas. Innovative has supported the program for six years, helping more than 300 Virgin Islands students prepare for the challenges of college. UVI Jazz and Steel Pan Ensembles Plan Concert Dec. 3 on St. Thomas Campus UVI’s Jazz Ensemble and Steel Pan Ensemble will appear in concert at 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 3, at the Dining Pavilion on the St. Thomas campus. The concert is presented by the Music Area of UVI’s College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences.
The Jazz Ensemble is under the direction of Prof. Martin Lamkin and the Steel Pan Ensemble is directed by Shenelle Warner. The performance will feature guest vocalist Detra Davis. The concert will feature holiday favorites as well as a variety of jazz and popular standards. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students. UVI’s Spirit of Christmas Concert Slated for Dec. 4 on St. Thomas UVI’s College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences will present its annual Christmas Concert – The Spirit of Christmas – at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 4, at Christchurch Methodist Church at Market Square in Charlotte Amalie. The concert will feature the UVI Concert Band under the direction of Professor Austin A. Venzen. Guest performers will be Lorna Freeman-Dennis, Andrea Lee, Detra Davis, Marcus and Portia Narkatis, Leah Trotman, Shirya Crabb and the Christchurch Golden Jems. A special appearance by Santa is expected. Tickets are available from the UVI Bookstore and the UVI Humanities on the St. Thomas campus, and from Nora’s Beauty Palace, Dockside Bookshop and concert band members. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students.
RT Park Real Estate Administration Committee to Meet Dec. 6 A meeting of the UVI Research and Technology Park Real Estate Administration Committee is scheduled for 3 p.m. (AST) on Monday, Dec. 6, at the RTPark Offices on UVI’s St. Croix campus. UVI-CES Plans Free Holiday Baking Workshops on St. Croix Free workshops on making sweet breads and fruit cakes are scheduled for Dec. 8 and 9 on UVI’s St. Croix campus. The classes are offered by the 4-H/Family and Consumer Sciences Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program of UVI’s Cooperative Extension Service. Classes will be offered in Room 134 of the UVI Research and Extension Center on the following schedule:
Wednesday, Dec. 8 – Sweet Breads – Times: 9 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m.
Thursday, Dec. 9 – Fruit Cakes – Times: 9 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m.

Spring Registration Now Open for Returning Students; New Students Register Jan. 5 Online registration for the spring semester using the University’s BanWeb system is available to returning UVI students now through Jan. 3, 2011. To register, students must confer with advisors to have courses approved and to receive login PINs. Tuition and fees for returning students may be paid – in person, by mail, by credit card or online – through Jan. 4, 2011. Payment by mail must be postmarked no later than Dec. 17.
Registration for new students is scheduled for Jan. 5, 2011. Registration is available in the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus. On the St. Croix campus, registration is available in the Great Hall.

UVI’s Music Area to Present Works by African-Diaspora Composers on Jan. 9 The Music Area of UVI’s College of Arts and Social Sciences will present a performance of music by African-Diaspora composers at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 9, 2011. The composers are R. Nathaniel Dett, Leslie Adams, Lorna C. Young-Wright, Andrés Wheatley, Florence B. Price and Wendell Whalum. Admission is free and the event will take place at the Nisky Moravian Church on St. Thomas. The presentation will feature mezzo soprano Janice R. Jackson of the University of Maryland-Baltimore County and pianist Lorna C. Young-Wright of UVI.
