Opening-Night Winners: Anchor Dive, Stealers and Cartel

Delayed one week due to recent inclement weather, the Bob Owens Slow Pitch Softball League kicked off its 2010-2011 season with three games Monday night at D.C. Canegata ballpark. Opening night winners were Anchor Dive, defending champions Seaborne Stealers, and the Cartel.

Anchor Dive 19, Set it Off 5
Anchor Dive opened the new softball season with a lopsided 19-5 clobbering of newcomers Set It Off in game one on Monday. It was Anchor Dive with 19 runs on 18 hits and three errors, while Set It off finished with five runs on nine hits and two errors. The winning pitcher was Edwin Sankitts, and Howard Forbes got the loss. Top batters for the winners were Danny Rodriguez (4 for 4 with two home runs and one RBI) and Rafael Almonte (4 for 5 with two home runs and seven RBIs). For Set it Off ,Juan Burgos was 2 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs.

Seaborne Stealers 14, Softball Inc. 12
The second game, a matchup of two of the league’s top teams from last season, saw the defending champions Seaborne Stealers outlast Softball Inc. 14-12. The Stealers finished with 14 runs on 12 hits and three errors, while Softball Inc. plated 12 runs on 13 hits and three errors. Samuel Ramos got the win on the hill for the champs, while Gabriel Jagrup got the loss.

Top batters for the Stealers were Raymond Cintron (4 for 4 with two home runs and three RBIs) and Ronald Schjang, Jr. (3 for 4 with a home run and one RBI). For Softball Inc., Leonardo Reyes was 3 for 5 with two home runs and five RBIs, and Nick Colabella was 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs.

Cartel 15, Coolers 10
In Monday’s night cap, the Cartel cooled another new team to the league, the Coolers, 15-10, to close out the opening night’s action. It was the Cartel with 15 runs on 12 hits and three errors, while the Coolers had 10 runs on 11 hits with two errors. Dexter DeSouza got the win on the hill for the Cartel, while James Smith got the loss for the Coolers. Pedro Gonzalez led the Cartel offensively, going ( for 2 with a home run and five RBIs, and Eddie Dunkirk was 2 for 4 with a home run and one RBI. For the Coolers, Pedro Perez was 2 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs, and Tomas Corcino was 1 for 2 with a home run and one RBI.
