Friends of the Park Online Auction Begins Friday

With a goal of raising $25,000 for its programs in V.I. National Park, the Friends of the Park group will hold an online auction that begins Friday. It runs through Dec. 5.

The group used to hold its auction at the annual gala, but last year went online to get more exposure.

“Now we have hundreds of thousands of people looking at the stuff,” Friends Development Director Heather Ruhsam said.

Last year, the group raised $15,000. Ruhsam said that in some cases, would-be visitors were able to put together vacation packages by bidding on accommodations and activities.

“You get a great deal on a vacation, and you do some good,” she said.

According to Ruhsam, she’ll add more items in the days leading up to the auction.

Items currently listed for auction include a a two-night stay at Biras Creek Resort on Virgin Gorda, a two-night visit to Sandcastle Hotel on Jost Van Dyke, a four-night stay at a Great Smoky Mountains National Park lodge, two nights at the Buccaneer Hotel on St. Croix, seven nights at Croix Vista Villa on St. John, a two-night stay at the Breakers in Palm Beach, Fla., and a four-night stay in Cancun, Mexico.

Other trips include a a sunset sail for up to 40 people on Keoka, a half-day champagne and snorkel sail on Adventuress, a full-day trip aboard the Southern Hospitality, a charter with Wet Woody’s restaurant to Jost Van Dyke, and two sea lion and two sea turtle encounters at Coral World on St. Thomas.

Other items include a catered three-course dinner by St. John chef Mathayom, a portrait by local artist Livy Hitchcock, an anemone print by Caroline Rogers, artwork by Dennis Hart, and a sculpture by Larry Lipskey.
