UVI to Close Nov. 11 in Observance of Veterans Day The University of the Virgin Islands will be closed in observance of Veterans Day on Thursday, Nov. 11. UVI classes will resume and administrative offices will reopen on their regular schedules on Friday, Nov. 12.
In an effort to maintain technology services to students during the holiday, the following computer labs will be open for students on Nov. 11: NWW 120 on St. Croix and the 24/7 library lab on St. Thomas. Students may also access online library resources at anytime by going to http://library.uvi.edu. Help Desk voice mail at extension 1466 and e-mail – helpdesk@uvi.edu – will be monitored during the holiday.
Emmy Winner Williams, UVI Theatre Present “South Pacific” on Nov. 12-13 Emmy Award-winning actor and author GregAlan Williams is the featured performer in the UVI Theatre’s fall production of the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical “South Pacific.” Williams will join a UVI Theatre cast and crew of more than 60 for the production’s two nights – Friday, Nov. 12, and Saturday, Nov. 13, at UVI’s Reichhold Center for the Arts. Showtime is 7 p.m. each night. Tickets are on sale now at the Reichhold Center Box Office, the UVI Bookstore, the UVI Humanities Building and Dockside Book Shop.

Mandatory New-Student Employee Orientation Set Nov. 12 on St. Thomas A mandatory new-student employee orientation session is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 12, on UVI’s St. Thomas campus. The orientation will take place in the Counseling and Placement Conference Room in the Roupp House Building. Students should call 693-1134 to confirm attendance.
Students who are scheduled to work when the orientation session is scheduled should inform their supervisors. Students who are unable to attend the orientation sessions should send an e-mail to: mwillia5@uvi.edu and mmyers@uvi.edu with dates and time slots of availability. The orientation is sponsored by the Division of Student Affairs and Counseling and Placement.
PRAXIS Exam to be Offered on St. Thomas Campus on Nov. 13 and 15 The PRAXIS Exams will be administered in the Nursing Education Building on UVI’s St. Thomas campus at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 13, and Monday, Nov. 15. Only persons who have registered with ETS (http://www.ets.org) will be tested. No walk-ins are allowed. Call 693-1462 for more information.
New “Why UVI?” Commercial Featured on “UVI Today…” Photo Blog A new TV and radio commercial in the “Why UVI?” campaign has been entered into the rotation on local stations, and the video is now available for viewing on the “UVI Today…” photo blog. The new commercial features UVI graduate student Christopher Loeffler. The photo blog also includes the campaign’s three other commercials, featuring UVI student Danelle Baptiste, UVI Trustee Jennifer Nugent Hill and UVI employee Dale Morton. St. Thomas SGA Officers Attend National Conference on Student Leadership Executive officers of UVI’s St. Thomas Student Government Association recently participated in the National Conference on Student Leadership (NCSL) Fall 2010 Conference in Orlando, Fla. The contingent included of SGA President Charlesworth McCarthy, Vice President Merl Eustache, Treasurer Davin Francis, Secretary LeslynTonge, Public Relations Officer Carlin Berridge and Senior Senator Randel Thompson. The group participated in a series of leadership workshops and seminars over four days. They also participated in the NCSL Certified Leadership Program and earned certified student leader status.
The students reported that the overall experience was good for all. The conference provided an opportunity to meet and mingle with students from other schools and colleges across the U.S. Students from as far as away as Guam participated.
UVI Students Participate in Gulf and Caribbean Fisheries Institute Eight undergraduate and graduate students from the University of the Virgin Islands recently participated in the 63rd annual meeting of the Gulf and Caribbean Fisheries Institute, held Nov. 1-5 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. At the institute, the students presented their research findings. Participating students were Keturah McCrae and Benise Tavernier. Graduate students from the Masters of Marine and Environmental Programs included Lia Ortiz, Gabrielle Renchen, Christina Colletti, Steven McCauley and Bryan Legare. (And Jeff Renchen?)

UVI-CES to Hold Diabetes Self-Management Workshop on Nov. 22 A free Diabetes Self-Management Workshop will be offered by the 4-H/Family and Consumer Sciences Expanded Food, Nutrition and Education Program of UVI’s Cooperative Extension Service. The workshop is scheduled for 10 a.m. to noon on Monday, Nov. 22, in the UVI Research and Extension Center, Room 133, on the St. Croix campus. Presenters will be nurse Desiree James and Dr. Ian K. UVI Students Urged to Apply for Dell Summer Fellowship in Washington, D.C. UVI graduate and undergraduate students with an interest in technology, public policy, ethics and diversity are encouraged to apply for the Dell Thurmond Woodard Fellowship as part of the Eben Tisdale Fellowship. This fellowship offers a $5,000 grant for a student to intern next summer – June 13 to Aug. 5, 2011 – in Washington, D.C., where the latest in technology meets the public policy arena.
The Woodard Fellowship was created in memory of the late Thurmond Woodard, a former vice president for the Dell computer company. The deadline to apply is Feb. 15, 2011. Those interested should use the Eben Tisdale Fellowship Application, found at www.tisdalefellowship.org, and follow the instructions for submitting an additional essay on ethics and diversity.

Scholarship Drive, Memorial Ceremony Set Nov. 19 to Honor Marvin Williams "The Caribbean Writer" will host a scholarship drive and memorial program in honor of the late Marvin E. Williams, a UVI professor of humanities and former editor of “The Caribbean Writer,” who died in April of this year, from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 19. The program will include reflections on the life of Williams, a choral reading of selected poems by Williams, a musical tribute by the UVI Community Inspirational Choir and a dance performance. A broadside dedicated to Williams will also be sold.
The memorial will take place in the Great Hall of the North West Wing on the St. Croix campus, with a videoconference link to the first-floor conference room at the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students. Funds raised will go toward an annual $1,000 scholarship to be awarded in Williams’ name.

28th St. Thomas/St. John Agriculture and Food Fair Set Nov. 20-21 The 28th Annual St. Thomas-St. John Agriculture and Food Fair will be held Nov. 20 and 21, on the grounds of UVI’s Reichhold Center for the Arts. The theme for this year is “Farm Today for a Healthier Tomorrow.” Fruits and vegetables, nursery plants, fruit trees, vegetable seedlings, local arts and crafts, food and much more will be on sale. Educational displays and workshops will also be available. Throughout the day there will be live entertainment and lots of games and activities for children, including a petting zoo at the livestock pavilion. Highlights of the fair will be the presentation of the 2010 Farmer of the Year awards, along with the award for best youth rap.

St. Croix Campus Accepting Bids on Aerial Lifting Equipment Until Nov. 29 The University of the Virgin Islands will accept sealed bids until Monday, Nov. 29, 2010, between the hours of 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day for used aerial lifting equipment currently located by the Physical Plant Office on the St. Croix Campus. The equipment will be sold as is. Only sealed bids will be accepted for the purchase of the equipment. Bid documents/instructions can be picked up from the Campus Operations Office.
