Gonzalez Rallies Expos Past Reds

The Expos Jonathan Gonzalez rips a game-winning triple.Jonathan Gonzalez delivered a clutch two-out, bases-loaded triple to rally the Expos past the Reds, 18-17, in an Ivor James Jr. U-23 Baseball league slugfest Tuesday night at D.C. Canegata Baseball Park.
Down 17-14 coming into the inning, the Expos picked up a run on a passed ball before Gonzalez’s big blow. The game was called after just four innings due to time constraints.
The Reds burst out of the gates in the top of the first inning with 13 runs against Expos Starter Joel Sierra and looked well on their way to a lopsided victory. However, reliever Joe Sanchez came on and prevented any further damage. Six walks and five errors accounted for all of the Reds runs. The Expos responded with five runs in their half of the inning on an RBI single by Jose Lopez, a bases-loaded walk and three unearned runs on Reds errors.
Sanchez would set the Reds down in order in the top of the second inning, and his offense went right back to work in the bottom of the frame, erupting for eight runs to tie the game at 13. The Expos scored on a two-run single by Lopez, RBI singles by Sierra and Anthony Cruz and four unearned runs on more Reds miscues.
The Reds retook the lead in the top of the third at 14-13 on a passed ball, but the Expos tied it up when Sanchez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the inning.
With the slow-moving game now over three-hours old, the umpire announced to both teams that the fourth inning would be the last. The Reds came out in the top of the inning and quickly put three runs on the board to take the lead at 17-14 on an RBI single by Kareem Jackson, a bases-loaded walk and an Expos error.
Reds pitching, however, allowed three straight walks to load the bases in the bottom of the inning, and after an RBI single by Sanchez made the score 17-15, the stage now set for Gonzalez’s late-inning heroics. With a 1-1 count, he ripped a fastball from reliever Ray Harris into the right field corner for the game winner.
Santo Pintero got the win in relief for the Expos, while Harris got the loss. Top batters for the Expos were Sierra (2 for 2 with one RBI), Lopez (2 for 2 with three RBIs) and Gonzalez (1 for 1 with three RBIs). For the Reds, Thomas was 1 for 2 with three RBIs, and Bryan was 3 for 3.
