Students Compete in St. Thomas-St. John Chess Tournament

Tommy Wise won 2nd place in the age 12 and under division.
There were many happy faces at the Virgin Islands Institute for Teaching and Learning’s student chess tournament as 12 students walked away with trophies and medals after four hours of intense play on the boards. The chess tournament was held on Saturday, Oct. 16, in the library at Antilles School.
There were 68 students who participated representing more than a dozen public and private elementary, middle and high schools. They played four rounds of chess.
The following top players received trophies and medals in their division.
Ages 9 and under
Honorable Mention: Senai Assefa, Antilles School and Dante Moron, Ulla Muller Elementary School
Third Place: Clarence Smith, Calvary Baptist School
Second Place: Teon Persaud, Ulla Muller Elementary School
First Place: Alex Gever, Antilles School
Ages 12 and under
Third Place (tie): Manav Thaddani, Antilles School and Nashun Nunez, Ulla Muller Elementary School
Second Place (tie): Tommy Wise, Sts. Peter and Paul School and Michael Emanuel, Wesleyan Academy
First Place: Jenjoe Canezal, Bertha C. Boschulte Middle School
Ages 13 and over
Third Place: Nkosi Jones, Gifft Hill School, St. John
Second Place: Alex Emerich, VI Montessori School
First Place (tie): Arthur Williams, Jr., Charlotte Amalie High School and Tabari Lake, Charlotte Amalie High School
Both Williams and Lake of CAHS were undefeated during the tournament, winning all of their games.
All 68 students received certificates of participation, a chess scoring book and pencils, compliments of the institute.
Sinclair Wilkinson, Chess Club coordinator for the V.I. Institute for Teaching and Learning, said, “It was a wonderful day for these youngsters. We have extremely strong players in all divisions. We have two more tournaments scheduled for later this year and early 2011. Results of the tournaments help us determine which students will travel off island to participate in a regional chess tournament in Orlando, Florida.”
The Virgin Islands Institute for Teaching and Learning Inc. is a non-profit organization established in 1989 to provide educational activities for schools and families in the community. The Institute also sponsors the Mother Goose Reading Program for parents. The institute is a United Way agency.
