The Department of Human Services (DHS) and Habitat for Humanity have partnered to develop a program to provide minor home modifications for senior citizens who live in substandard conditions. A kick-off fundraising campaign is scheduled for 1-5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 18, at the St. Peter Mountain Great House and Botanical Gardens.
Entitled the “Golden Touch,” the program is designed to maximize efforts made by DHS through the Adult Protective Services Program (APS) to minimize health and safety hazards in the home for seniors who have physical limitations. The significance of the modifications is to provide independence for the elderly to enjoy their latter years in their own home. Some of the renovations include installing shower grab bars, lowering countertops and widening doorways for those in wheelchairs, and building exterior access ramps as well as other American with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessibility related improvements.
Eligible clients for the program were referred through APS, which is charged with intervening on behalf of the elderly who have been subject to emotional, physical and fiscal abuse from family and/or associates. Thirteen eligible seniors will benefit from the Golden Touch program and will be adopted by volunteers to complete the sweat equity requirement of Habitat. Recipients of Habitat services must physically assist with the renovations or have a relative or associate help to complete the work on their behalf.
The goal of the fundraiser is to raise $50,000 to purchase materials and tools. There will also be a silent jewelry auction, live entertainment and other activities. The public is invited to attend. Tickets are $30.
