DOA Announces 2010 National Farmers’ Market Week

In celebration and observation of National Farmers’ Market Week, Aug. 1-7, the V.I. Department of Agriculture is planning a series of activities in partnership with crop and livestock producers. As a part of this year’s celebration, farmers’ markets will be held throughout the territory, featuring fresh produce, meats, poultry products, honey, local drinks and other value added products.

Farmers’ markets represent an integral part of the Virgin Islands community and provide an outlet for consumers to purchase fresh wholesome foods directly from farmers while generating sales and income for producers. Such markets also have long term benefits for farmers by enhancing networking and expanding their customer base.
The scheduled farmers’ markets for this year’s celebration are as follows:
· St. John – 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 6, in the Cruz Bay Park
· St. Croix – 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 6, at the Ann E. Heyliger Vegetable Market
· St. Thomas – 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 7, at the Abattoir in Estate Nadir
All farmers interested in participating in these up-coming activities are encouraged to contact DOA by Friday, July 23, at 778-0998 on St. Croix; 774-5182 on St. Thomas; or 776-6274 on St. John.
