Health Department to Hold Saturday Cancer Forum

The V.I. Health Department’s Breast and Cervical Early Detection Program plans a forum about cancer and programs for optimal health and well-being this Saturday at the Westin Resort and Villas on St. John.
The forum, which runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., is geared to both medical professionals and the general public.
“They’re going to leave there with a lot of knowledge they’re going to tap into,” Phyllis Titre, data manager for the Breast and Cervical Early Detection Program, said.
That includes knowing who and where to go for help. Additionally, Titre said the panelists will provide information about cancer prevention.
The panel includes Dr. Samuel Hughs, director of radiation oncology at the Charlotte Kimelman Cancer Institute on St. Thomas; Dr. Edith Ramsey-Johnson, a former UVI nursing professor who is now director of research education for the Caribbean Exploratory Research Center for Excellence; and Dr. Bert Petersen, managing partner of the New York-based Global Cancer Control and International Cancer Consultancy and Project Management.
Other panelists are Gail-Ann Guy-Felix, a medical social worker and patient navigator at Charlotte Kimelman, Morris DeCastro Clinic Administrator Ronnie Jones, and Jewel Harrigan, interim executive director of the V.I. Bureau of Health Insurance/Medicaid Assistance.
“I am pleased that the forum is being offered on St. John as part of ongoing efforts to bring healthcare back to the community,” Sheen said in a press release. “I encourage residents to come and learn more about the disease from our noted panelists.”
The Health Department will pick up participants from the Cruz Bay ferry dock at 8:20 a.m., 9:20 a.m. and 10:20 a.m. Drop-offs back at the dock depart the Westin at 12:45 p.m., 1:45 p.m., and 2:30 p.m.
Lunch is provided by the Health Department.
Nurses can get Continuing Education Units for attending the forum. Doctors will receive Continuing Medical Education credits.
To pre-register, call 773-1311, ext. 3158 or 3131. Onsite registration begins at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.
