Two Injured in Car Accident at Work Site

Police are probing an accident that left two people injured Thursday.

The accident occurred at about 12:30 p.m. near a road construction site on Brookman Road in the area of Estate Charlotte Amalie.

According to Traffic Investigation officers, a tan Camry ran into the back of a white Chevy truck that had been stopped by a flag person near the construction site. A man riding in the back was thrown from the truck upon impact and sustained a serious head injury.

The victim, a native of Haiti whose age was not known, was taken by ambulance to the Roy L. Schneider Regional Medical Center and treated.

The flag person was also struck by the Camry and was treated at the hospital for superficial injuries, police said. The driver of the truck was not injured.

The driver of the Camry, a 50-year-old Hispanic man, told police his brakes had failed. Police said there were other passengers in the vehicle, but they fled the scene when the accident happened.

Officers are looking into the cause of the accident, including details about the brake failure. Police have also contacted Custom and Border Patrol officers to determine the legal status of the driver.
