District Hosts Meeting for Parents of Students With Disabilities Regarding IEP Audit

The St. Croix District Office of the Insular Superintendent invites all parents of students with disabilities and parent advocates to a meeting at 6 p.m. on Friday, May 14, at the Curriculum Center in Kingshill. The meeting will unveil the results of independent audit of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and the delivery of services to students with disabilities in the school district.

The Virgin Islands Department of Education contracted with the Urban Special Education Leadership Collaborative at Education Development Center Inc., (EDC) in Newton, Massachusetts, to conduct the audit between October 2009 and January 2010. The audit assessed the degree to which students with disabilities in the district were receiving the services guaranteed by their IEPs andsought to determine whether students were benefiting from those services and making satisfactory progress toward goals and objectives as specified in their IEPs.
The report is organized into four sections: methodology, results of the study, summary of the findings and recommendations. This information will provide a baseline for future comparisons and progress monitoring as the school district and the V.I. Department of Education seek to strengthen their services for students with disabilities.
