Rotary Will Award Scholarship to St. John Student

The Javon Jade Alfred Scholarship is offered by the Rotary Club of St. John to assist a resident of St. John graduating from a high school in the U.S. Virgin Islands in the pursuit of higher education. A need and merit based scholarship award will be an annual scholarship totaling $5,000 during the student’s first year, $3,500 the second year, $2,500 the third year and $1,500 the fourth year. Recipients may reapply for consideration annually. Monetary awards will be made on an annual basis and disbursed at the beginning of each semester. Students are expected to maintain a 3.0 (“B” average).

Eligibility requirements for the Javon Jade Alfred Scholarship are:
• The student must be a resident of St. John graduating in June from a high school in the U.S. Virgin Islands
• The student must have a 3.0 or better cumulative grade point average
• The student must have been accepted to an institution of higher education
• The student must demonstrate financial need (parent or guardian’s tax return from the previous year). All financial information provided will be held in strict confidence. Application forms can be obtained from high school guidance counselors, at Connections of St. John, or by e-mailing william@willigerod.com or jfuller@rotarystjohn.org.
The following information must be submitted with the application form:
• Transcript of credits
• S.A.T. scores
• Record of extracurricular activities
• Three letters of reference. One must be an academic reference. The other two may be selected from a previous employer, guidance counselor, or character reference.
• A short essay on the topic: Excellence
All applicants meeting the eligibility requirements will be interviewed. The interviews will be conducted in May 2010. Eligible applicants will be notified of the date, time and place of their interview. The applications, including the essay, letters of reference and proof of financial need must be completed and submitted to the Vocational Services Committee of the St. John Rotary Club, c/o Connections of St. John or William Willigerod, 16213 Spring Garden, St. John, VI 00830, no later than 5 p.m., April 28.
