Landmark Society Elects Board Members

The St. Croix Landmarks Society elected six new members to its board of trustees Saturday at its annual membership meeting held at the Estate Whim Museum.

The meeting drew a full house, as members heard reports from Executive Director Sonja Jacobs Dow and board chairman Gerville Larsen.

Larsen and Hortensia Lanio were re-elected to the 18-member board. The other members elected Saturday were Margi Levy, Emile Henderson III, Delmin Jerry Garcia and the Rev. George Franklin.

During the meeting, which was held under an awning on the broad lawn of the plantation museum, graduates of the group’s volunteer training program were honored, and received pins.

“People sometimes wonder how does the Landmark Society, which has such a small staff, get so much done,” Jacobs Dow said. Pointing to the line of newly trained volunteers, she said, “Here’s our secret.”

In answer to a question from the audience, Jacobs Dow said the society is planning to celebrate Transfer Day with a ceremony at 10 a.m. March 30 at the Lawaetz Family Museum in Estate Little La Grange.

The meeting was also highlighted by a performance of a number from “Yesterday’s Dreamers Tomorrow’s Stars,” an original production featuring students from many of the island’s high schools.

Following the meeting, the members retreated to another section of the lawn where they were treated to a party in honor of the members and volunteers.
