Labor and Others Offer Tax Preparation Forums and Workshops for Disabled Planned

In recognition of National Disability Awareness Month, the Department of Labor in partnership with the AARP, the U.S. Virgin Islands Internal Revenue Bureau (IRB), the V.I. Department of Human Services – Disabilities and Rehabilitation Services, V.I. Social Security Administration, V.I. Independent Living Center, Work Able, and the V.I. Small Business Development Center will be hosting workshops designed to increase tax knowledge, filing access and asset building opportunities for persons with disabilities, including veterans. The series of workshops called the “Real Economic Impact Tour” is a national partnership with the National Disability institute (NDI) and the Internal Revenue Service, according to a press release from Labor Commissioner Albert Bryan Jr.
The U.S. Social Security Administration Office of Retirement Disability Policy reported in 2008 that there are over 5,698 men and 6,542 women over the age of 65 in the Virgin Islands living with a disability. Individuals with disabilities represent a large group of low-wage workers who underutilize the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and other favorable tax provisions.
Sessions are as follows:
Part 1 – “Real Economic Impact Tour” – Free Informational Forum: Learn about the 2010 tax facts; increase your tax knowledge and asset building opportunities for people with disabilities and their family members.
St. Croix: 10 a.m. – noon and 1-3 p.m., March 22, at AARP Offices – Sunny Isle Shopping Center St. Thomas: 10 a.m. – noon and 1-3 p.m., March 30, at Small Business Development Center, Nisky Center – Suite 720
Part 2 – “Real Economic Impact Tour “– Free 2010Tax Filing Assistance Workshop:
St. Croix: 10 a.m. – noon and1-3 p.m., March 29, at AARP Offices – Sunny Isle Shopping Center St. Thomas: 10 a.m. – noonand1-3 p.m., April 8, at Small Business Development Center, Nisky Center – Suite 720
