Delegate to Nominate House Page from the V.I. for Summer Session

Virgin Islands Delegate to Congress Donna Christensen is seeking a qualified high school junior to nominate for acceptance into the House of Representatives Page Program. The right to nominate a page is granted to each member of Congress on a rotation system. She will once again nominate a talented, young adult from her district to serve from July 11 through Aug. 6.

A house page is a young adult who is hired as support staff for the House of Representatives. There are 72 pages selected for each semester from over 400 members of Congress. These students must have at least a 3.0 GPA before being considered for the prestigious position and be sponsored by a member of Congress. In order to qualify for the summer session, students must have completed their sophomore or Junior year in high school, have not yet entered their senior year and be at least 16 years of age before reporting to Washington, D.C. Pages’ duties largely encompass deliveries of correspondence, legislative material and small packages within the Capitol complex. Duties also sometimes include assignment to the members’ cloakroom in addition to attending Page School.
We are requesting that high schools in the Virgin Islands select one very exceptional student from their school for nomination to the program. The student must be a junior who has done at least 70 hours of community service, been involved in extra circular activities and is a United States Citizen or be in possession of a work visa (green card).
The selected student must then submit two letters of recommendation, one from the school and one from a member of the community. The student will then be asked to submit a letter of interest explaining in 100 to 150 words why he or she believes he or she would be an exceptional addition to the House Page program. And finally there will be three students selected from among all the schools, and interviews will be conducted to make the final decision for sponsorship to the program. The deadline for this request is April 12. Following the deadline, the Delegate Christensen’s nominee will be contacted by the Clerk of the House of Representatives via a confirmation letter if they have been selected.
