Mango Tango Introduces Artist Annie Westcott-MacPhail

Mango Tango Art Gallery has added a new artist in its line up – Annie Westcott-MacPhail. Gallery co-owner Jane Coombes notes that one requirement of each of Mango Tango’s artists is to constantly explore. Coombes says “we want the artist to take us on a never ending journey and that Annie does.”
Westcott-MacPhail’s creativity will be showcased at Mango Tango Seaside Art Gallery at Yacht Haven Grande from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.Friday Dec. 4 and from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m.Sunday Dec. 6 at Mango Tango Hillside Art Gallery As a designer, MacPhail. combines her artistic and business sensibilities in eco-friendly fashion.

Westcott-MacPhail was born and raised in New England . An artist and avid sailor, she has called the Caribbean home for the past 17 years. After working for several marketing and software companies, she established CaribAtlantic Group in 2003, a small marketing and public relations firm focused on assisting small and medium-sized Caribbean businesses, allowing them to reach out to new international markets using web-based and print media.

In 2004, she retained House of Wonders (hand crafted eco-friendly furniture made from retired East African sailing dhows) as a client. MacPhail worked very closely with the company and was so enthusiastic about the concept, that she is now a partner and represents the company throughout the Caribbean and the Americas.

In an effort to compliment the furniture, she sought out sustainable fabrics over the past several years. This inevitably headed to finding a fine line of recycled cotton truck tarp in Brazil and using it for upholstery. She found the rugged fabrics and full array of colors perfectly suited for not only home furnishings, but other applications such as annie macphail ™ bags and totes.

As a designer and entrepreneur, it was simple for MacPhail to visualize this fabric applied to fashion. “I just love this cotton fabric. It is rugged, durable and has such character. My producer has a keen eye for color and a clean process for softening and naturally dying the heavy-duty cotton tarp, so my bags are rich with texture from the natural patina and patches and the embroidery. We focus on classic styles: the carpetbag, the weekender, and spin off of the classic motorcycle ‘roll bag’. Each of my bags is unique and the fun part is choosing one that is “so you!”.

annie macphail ™ was developed in 2008 and launched in 2009 at the New York International Gift Fair with a line of six different designs. Not long after, several new designs were rolled out and many more are in development..

Westcott-MacPhail’s line is in the limelight and now will be here in St. Thomas . Both the Friday night and Sunday afternoon openings are trunk parties for Westcott- MacPhail. Enjoy the music of 2 Blue Shoes at the rum punch reception where used tires will display her bags.
