Lloyd McAlpin Dies at 59

Lloyd McAlpin, age 59, died on Nov. 1 in Tampa, Fla. Funeral services will be held on St. Croix, but the family has not yet released the details.
McAlpin, a former commissioner with the V.I. Casino Control Commission from December, 2000 until his retirement in August, 2009 has been an employee of the Government for over 33 years, having worked with the V.I. Department of Labor, Territorial Court of the V.I., the V.I. Legislature and the Office of the Governor, and as a delegate to Congress, he has served in all three branches of government in a variety of positions and has also worked with private sector and public service organizations such as the U.S. Small Business Administration. He was a proven manager, who demonstrated sound judgment and reasoned decision making. Lloyd has always been sensitive to the needs of young people, proving this through his longterm involvement in Little League affairs. He served for 10 years as vice president and president of the Elmo Plaskett East Little League on St. Croix.
Lloyd was also a member of the Crucian Cultural Institute and Dramatique Calabash where he not only appeared in several plays, including "Granny Gumbo" and "Superstition," but held the leading roles. He was very involved in his church, where he contributed his bass voice to the Holy Cross Catholic Church Choir and served as a labor and public affairs consultant to former Bishop Elliot G. Thomas and the Catholic Diocese of the Virgin Islands.
Lloyd was elected to the V.I. Board of Elections for 10 consecutive years (1979 – 1989). He served as the chairman for the St. Croix District Board as well as the chairman of the V.I. Joint Board of Elections.
Born to Henrique and Adina Ellis McAlpin in Christiansted, St. Croix, Oct. 22, 1950, he attended the St. Mary’s and St. Joseph’s Catholic Schools, as well as Inter-American University in San German, Puerto Rico, and Howard University in Washington, D.C., where he earned his B.S. degree in political science.
Lloyd was married to Ferne Joseph McAlpin, and they have two children, Jada P.E. McAlpin and Cory L.L. McAlpin.
