Herbert E. Lockhart III Dies in Washington, D.C.

Herbert E. Lockhart IIIHerbert E. Lockhart III, affectionately called Herbie by most, died Tuesday in Washington, D.C., after a lengthy illness.

Herbie was born on St. Thomas, where he lived most of his life. He attended All Saints Parish School and Sts. Peter and Paul, and he completed high school at Colegio San Justo; he graduated from Milton College in Wisconsin. Herbie was well known for running two businesses: a towing company, Herbie’s Big Tow, and later a party-tent rental company, Herbie’s Big Top. In later years he discontinued the towing and expanded his tent business to include accessories.
He was a long-standing member of the Rotary Club of St. Thomas, serving as its president for one year, and was made a Paul Harris Fellow, the highest honor which can be bestowed on a Rotarian. Herbie was a Boy Scout throughout his childhood and later served on their board. He was always involved in their annual fishing tournament and their Royak Regatta. He donated the use of the tents to the American Lung Association’s summer camp for asthmatics and was honored by them for his constant support and dedication. For his community involvement, on Sept. 26, 2009, he will be honored by the Law Enforcement Planning Commission’s Night Out Against Crime, Guns and Violence.
He is survived by his mother, Corinne Lockhart; brothers, Dale Garee and wife Joy, Ronald Lockhart, Henrik Lockhart and wife Ellen; and sister, Catherine Lockhart Mills and husband Don. He has three nieces, Jade Garee M. D., Elynne Lockhart and Corinne Mills; nephew, Ward Garee; and “adopted son,” Brian Liz. He is also survived by aunts: Grace Itah Dutil, Ethel Lloyd and Marjorie Petersen; and uncle, Jack Lloyd; first cousins: Joanne and Kaj Petersen, Karen Hastie Williams Esq. and Wesley Williams Esq., Kathleen and Ira Goldberg, William Hastie Esq., Veronica Hastie Esq., Susan Lugo, George Dudley Esq., Rita Dudley-Grant, Ph.D. and Richard Grant, Beryl Haygood, Joseph Dutil, Marie and Jack Abrams, Corinne and Vinnie Toomey, Cindy and David Barber, Susan Lloyd, Ph.D., Stephen and Rita Lloyd, Jacqueline Lloyd and William Parker, Ph.D., Phillip and Elizabeth Lloyd, Annette and Richard Conners, Christopher Petz, Anne Conrade, Maria and EJ Burke, Bruce and Barbara Petz, Brad and Joni Petz and other members of the Adams, Barbel, Daniel, Elskoe, Finch, Kirketerp, McAllister, Nicholson and Lockhart families.
