UVI Professor to Conduct Live Chats on Ocean Research from Sea of Japan
A University of the Virgin Islands professor will conduct a live chat on Saturday, Sept. 19, from on board a research vessel in the Sea of Japan. The public is invited to attend the 45-minute session, which will take place at noon, in Room T101 of the Teacher Education Building on UVI’s St. Thomas campus.
Educators who want to involve their students in real-time deep ocean geological research, as well as members of the public, are encouraged to attend the videoconference session with Prof. Nasseer Idrisi. Subsequent live chats are scheduled for noon on Sunday, Sept. 27; Saturday, Oct. 10; and Sunday, Oct. 25.

UVI-RTPark to Hold Finance, Executive Committee Meetings Sept. 18
The University of the Virgin Islands Research and Technology Park Finance and Audit Committee will hold a teleconference meeting at 3:30 p.m. (AST/EST) on Friday, Sept. 18, followed by an executive committee meeting.
The meeting will be held at the RT Park offices on the St Croix campus. For further information, please contact Ingrid Santangelo at 692-4200. Seating is limited.
VIMAS Organizing Coastweeks Cleanups on St. Croix Starting Sept. 19
The Virgin Islands Marine Advisory Service (VIMAS) is organizing Coastweeks cleanups on St. Croix, from Sept. 19 through Oct. 10. Anyone interested is organizing or joining a beach or underwater cleanup on St. Croix should call Marcia Taylor at 692-4046 or send email to mtaylor@uvi.edu.
24th Annual International Coastal Cleanup Set Sept. 19 at Brewers Beach
Members of the Virgin Islands public are encouraged to participate in the 24th annual International Coastal Cleanup which begins this September. Organized globally by the Ocean Conservancy, the USVI Coastweeks effort is coordinated locally by the University of the Virgin Islands, the V.I. Department of Planning and Natural Resources’ Coastal Zone Management Division, Friends of the V.I. National Park and the V.I. Waste Management Authority.
Cleanups of beaches and watershed areas are being planned throughout the territory, with the effort beginning on Sept. 19, at Brewers Bay Beach on UVI’s St. Thomas campus. Clean-ups will be held at numerous other locations on St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John during the remainder of September and into October. The Caribbean Writer Publishes 23rd Issue
The Caribbean Writer, an international literary anthology published by the University of the Virgin Islands, announces the publication of its 23rd issue. The volume contains new poetry by Edwidge Danticat and an interview with Kamau Brathwaite by Opal Palmer Adisa. The volume is dedicated to Professor Marvin E. Williams, who stepped down as editor this year.
The Caribbean Writer is available at local bookstores on St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John, and at the UVI bookstores on both islands. Mandatory Meeting for Reichhold Center Volunteers Set Saturday, Sept. 19
UVI’s Reichhold Center for the Arts will conduct a mandatory meeting for volunteers at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19, in the Reichhold lobby. All persons who are currently enrolled in the Reichhold Center Volunteer Program are required to attend. Adults who are interested in joining the program are also required to attend. Symposium to Feature Student Researchers on Sept. 20; UVI Community Invited
The University of the Virgin Islands’ 11th annual Fall Student Research Symposium will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 20. More than 60 UVI student researchers are expected to participate in the event that will take place in the first floor conference room of the Administration and Conference Center on UVI’s St. Thomas campus.
Sponsored by UVI’s Division of Science and Mathematics and the Emerging Caribbean Scientists (ECS) program, the symposium’s goal is to showcase the outstanding quality and diversity of undergraduate and graduate student research that UVI students have conducted over the summer and during the past year. The symposium is designed to demonstrate the importance of science, technology, engineering, mathematics and psychology oriented research to the greater UVI and Virgin Islands communities.

Free Basic Boating Course to Begin at UVI on Sept. 22
The free Basic Boating Course offered by the St. Thomas Division of the United States Sail and Power Squadron will be offered beginning Sept. 22, at the MacLean Marine Science Center on UVI’s St. Thomas campus. Classes will be held from 6-8 p.m., each Tuesday and Thursday, through Oct. 13.
The U.S. Sail and Power Squadron is a non-profit, educational organization dedicated to making boating safer and more enjoyable by teaching classes in seamanship, navigation and related subjects. The course includes lessons on seamanship, boat handling, boat types, rules of the road, navigation aids, regulations, adverse conditions, marine VHF radio, knots, trailering and introductory piloting. Successful participants receive a certificate that is recognized by many insurance and boating organizations.
Individuals who operate any motorized University vessels are required to take this course or an equivalent.
While the course is offered free of charge, the cost of materials – including books, equipment and a CD featuring digital chart training – is $75. For more information, contact Tom McCoy at 690-0729.
Orientation for New Student Employees on St. Thomas Campus Set Sept. 23
An orientation session for new student employees on UVI’s St. Thomas campus is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 23. It will take place in Teacher Education Building room 216. Supervisors and student employees may contact the Student Employment Office at 693-1088 to indicate their intention to attend.
Virgin Islands Seizure Disorder Support Group to Meet Sept. 24
The Virgin Islands Seizure Disorder Support Group (VISD) will conduct its monthly meeting from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 24, at the Schneider Regional Hospital’s Sun Room on St. Thomas. Shammi Carr, program coordinator of the VI University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities, will present information on the Americans with Disabilities Act (Title I) and discuss how it impacts job seekers and employees with seizure disorders in the workplace. Time will also be spent discussing and planning for Seizure Disorder Awareness Month in November. St. Croix Bookstore to Close for Inventory Sept. 24-30
The St. Croix Bookstore will be closed from Thursday, Sept. 24 through Wednesday, Sept. 30 for inventory. The Bookstore will resume normal operation on Thursday, Oct. 1. Students who have not purchased their required textbooks for the fall semester are asked to do so before Sept. 14. All unsold textbooks will be returned to the publishers and used books wholesalers after that date.
The Bookstore also plans to hold a student appreciation day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 15, with discounts on UVI merchandise, along with treats, games and prizes. Student IDs will be required.
St. Thomas Bookstore to Close for Inventory Sept. 25 through 30
The St. Thomas Campus Bookstore will be closed for Inventory taking from Friday, Sept. 25 through Wednesday, Sept. 30. The Bookstore will resume normal operation on Thursday, Oct. 1. Students, faculty, staff, department heads, division heads, heads of government agencies and the general public are asked to take note and to conduct the necessary business with the Bookstore before or after the affected dates.

UVI-RTPark Directors to Meet Sept. 26 on St. Thomas
The Board of Directors of the University of the Virgin Islands Research and Technology Park (RTPark) Corporation and the Research and Technology Park Protected Cell Corporation (RTPark-PC) will meet at 9 a.m. (AST/EST) on Saturday, Sept. 26.
The session will take place in the third-floor conference room of Administration and Conference Center on UVI’s St. Thomas campus.

Meeting for Prospective UVI Graduates on St. Thomas Planned for Sept. 27
A meeting and social for all prospective 2010 St. Thomas campus University of the Virgin Islands graduates (students earning associates, bachelors and graduate degrees) will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 27. The session will take place in the Administration and Conferencing Center. The agenda includes elections of class officers, class activities and a review of requirements for graduation. UVI-CELL Offers Certificate in Management Skills in the Workplace
UVI’s Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center will offer a series of six-workshops on management skills beginning Sept. 30. The program, offered in cooperation with the American Management Association (AMA) provides a certificate to individuals who complete the six workshops.
The program combines instructor-led training and other resources to maximize training goals. It provides a rich, compelling, comprehensive experience for the learner, producing a greater return-on-investment for the employer. The fee is $250 per person, per workshops. HIV/AIDS Conference Set for Oct. 2 on St. Thomas Campus
A day-long conference on HIV/AIDS titled “Youth Taking Control” will be held on UVI’s St. Thomas campus on Friday, Oct. 2. All UVI students and high school seniors are invited to participate. The goal is to increase awareness of the risk of drug use and HIV/AIDS. The conference is sponsored by the Office of the Associate Campus Executive Administrator for Student Affairs. Researchers to Spotlight Virgin Islands Health Disparities on Oct. 15-16
Researchers from across the nation will visit the Virgin Islands this fall to share their insights on issues related to health disparities at the Second Annual Health Disparities Institute sponsored by the Caribbean Exploratory NCMHD Research Center at the University of the Virgin Islands. "Bridging Science, Practice and Culture to Improve Health in the U.S. Virgin Islands" is the theme for the institute, which is slated for Oct.15 and 16 at The Westin St. John Resort & Villas.
“The institute will provide important health information to the entire Virgin Islands community,” said Dr. Gloria Callwood, director of the Caribbean Exploratory Research Center, which is operated by UVI’s Division of Nursing Education. “We’re expecting at least 175 persons to participate, including both local and national presenters,” Dr. Callwood said. “We invite all persons who are concerned about their health and the health of our community to join us at this important event.”

SBDC to Host GIA Jewelry Professionals Course on St. Thomas in November
The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) will conduct its accredited Jewelry Professional Intensive Diploma Program course from Nov. 2 through 6 on St. Thomas. Classes in the course will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily at UVI’s Small Business Development Center Training Facility at Nisky Center. The course offers intensive study of the essentials of jewelry product knowledge and proven sales techniques needed to approach customers, earn their trust and close sales. Students learn to communicate the value of diamonds and acquiring in-depth product information on diamonds, rubies, emeralds, sapphires and other precious stones.
