The young man allegedly wanted to rob the church. He didn’t count on members taking exception.
Police on St. Croix arrested 18-year-old Kurt Huggins Saturday after he was detained by members of Iglesias De Dios Sol De Justica, a church in Estate Castle Coakley, who told police Huggins came into the church and robbed them at gunpoint.
Police responded to the call for assistance shortly after noon Saturday. When they arrived, members told police Huggins came into the church brandishing a gun, ordering everyone on the ground and demanding money.
According to the people at the church, one man gave the suspect cash, then knocked the gun out his hand. Other members helped to hold Huggins until the police arrived.
Huggins, who lives in Estate Herman Hill, was charged with robbery in the first degree. His bail was set at $75,000, and he was remanded to the Golden Grove Adult Correctional Facility pending further court action.
