UVI Labor Day Volleyball Invitational Attracts 11 Teams
The University of the Virgin Islands Athletic Department will host its 9th annual Labor Day Invitational Volleyball Tournament at the Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas campus from Sept. 4 through 6. Five men’s teams and six women’s squads are signed up to play, including four club teams from the U.S. mainland. The mainland squads will go up against teams from Puerto Rico (Metropolitan), St. Martin, Tortola, St. Croix and St. Thomas.
On the men’s side, the tournament will provide pre-season competition for the UVI Buccaneers men’s volleyball squad, according to Tournament Director Curtis Gilpin. UVI’s Buccaneers are scheduled to open their LAI season with a home game on Sept. 18, said Gilpin, who is also UVI’s associate athletic director.

UVI to Close Monday, Sept. 7, to Observe Labor Day
The University of the Virgin Islands will be closed on Monday, Sept. 7, in observance of Labor Day. Classes will resume and UVI administrative offices will reopen on their regular schedules on Tuesday, Sept. 8.
UVI’s Libraries to Close for Labor Day; Lab Access Planned for Students
UVI’s libraries will be closed in observance of the Labor Day holiday on Monday, Sept. 7. Regular hours will resume at 8 a.m., on Tuesday, Sept. 8. Both campuses will offer computer lab access for students on the following schedule:
On St. Croix, students will be able to utilize the NWW 120 Lab. Students may request access through the Security Department, present their UVI ID, and sign in order to gain access.
On St. Thomas, the 24/7 Library Lab is available for student use. Students can access the lab by using their ID cards with the magnetic strip. Students without the newly issued IDs will not be able to access the lab. Students who want lab access should sign up for new ID cards at the library by 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 4.
Students may also access online library resources at anytime by going to library.uvi.edu. The UVI Help Desk voice mail at ext. 1466 and e-mail (helpdesk@uvi.edu) will be monitored during the holiday. If a technology emergency occurs, please leave a message and an ITS technician will follow up.
HIV/AIDS Conference Set for Oct. 2 on St. Thomas Campus
A day-long conference on HIV/AIDS titled “Youth Taking Control” will be held on UVI’s St. Thomas campus on Friday, Oct. 2. All UVI students and high school seniors are invited to participate. The goal is to increase awareness of the risk of drug use and HIV/AIDS. The conference is sponsored by the Office of the Associate Campus Executive Administrator for Student Affairs. More information on registration will be provided to students in the near future. For more information call 693-1120.
UVI Students, Alumni Attend NBNA Institute and Conference
Nine University of the Virgin Islands students and alumni attended the National Black Nurses Association (NBNA) Institute and Conference in Toronto, Canada, from Aug. 2-6. A photo of the participants and more details are featured on the UVI Today photo blog. UVI Today is available from a button on the UVI home page – www.uvi.edu.
Dateline: UVI Newsletter Features New President, Fall Orientation Activities
The August issue of the Dateline: UVI newsletter has been distributed to university offices on both campuses and is now available from the Public Relations section of the UVI Web site: www.uvi.edu . The newsletter includes stories on UVI’s new president, Dr. David Hall, and fall semester orientation activities. Also included are photos of recently honored alumni and sorority members taking part in an Organizations Fair on the St. Croix campus.
Computer Literacy Exam Dates Announced
Dates and locations for UVI’s Fall Semester Computer Literacy Exams (CLE) have been announced for both campuses. The schedules listed below are also available under the Testing tab in the Registrar’s section of the UVI Web site: www.uvi.edu.
St. Thomas CLE Schedule
Exams on the St. Thomas campus will be administered from noon to 2 p.m. in room 103 of the Classroom Administration Building (CAB). Sign-up sheets are available in the Registrar’s Office on the first floor of the Administration and Conference Center. For more information, call 693-1160.

Computer Literacy Tutorials are offered on the St. Croix campus from noon to 2 p.m. in room 131 of the North West Wing Building on Sept. 14, Oct. 14 and Oct. 21. No registration is required to take part in a tutorial.
Intramural Coed Volleyball Coming to St. Thomas Campus
An intramural coed volleyball league is being formed on UVI’s St. Thomas campus, with league play scheduled to begin in mid-September. Matches will take place at 8 p.m. on Thursdays. Teams will consist of 10 players, with no more than six players on the court at any time. Teams must have a minimum of three female players on the court to play. Currently enrolled UVI students, faculty and staff are eligible. No currently active varsity volleyball athletes are permitted in this league. Interested individuals should also sign up. Clubs and Organizations Awareness Day Set Sept. 10 on St. Croix Campus
A Clubs and Organizations Awareness Day is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 10, by the Student Activities Office on UVI’s St. Croix campus. 24th Annual International Coastal Cleanup Set Sept. 19 at Brewers Beach
Members of the Virgin Islands public are encouraged to participate in the 24th annual International Coastal Cleanup which begins this September. Organized globally by the Ocean Conservancy, the USVI Coastweeks effort is coordinated locally by the University of the Virgin Islands, the V.I. Department of Planning and Natural Resources’ Coastal Zone Management Division, Friends of the V.I. National Park and the V.I. Waste Management Authority.
Cleanups of beaches and watershed areas are being planned throughout the territory, with the effort beginning on Sept. 19, at Brewers Bay Beach on UVI’s St. Thomas campus. Clean-ups will be held at numerous other locations on St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John during the remainder of September and into October. Researchers to Spotlight Virgin Islands Health Disparities on Oct. 15-16
Researchers from across the nation will visit the Virgin Islands this fall to share their insights on issues related to health disparities at the Second Annual Health Disparities Institute sponsored by the Caribbean Exploratory NCMHD Research Center at the University of the Virgin Islands. "Bridging Science, Practice and Culture to Improve Health in the U.S. Virgin Islands" is the theme for the institute, which is slated for Oct. 15 and 16, at The Westin St. John Resort & Villas.
“The institute will provide important health information to the entire Virgin Islands community,” said Dr. Gloria Callwood, director of the Caribbean Exploratory Research Center, which is operated by UVI’s Division of Nursing Education. “We’re expecting at least 175 persons to participate, including both local and national presenters,” she said. “We invite all persons who are concerned about their health and the health of our community to join us at this important event.”
