Jamal Allister Morton was arrested by St. Thomas Police Friday, one day after he allegedly fired random shots on the steps of the Federal Building on Veterans Drive.
Police responded to report of shots discharged at about 1 p.m. Thursday in the area of the Federal Building. According to the initial report, eyewitnesses told police they saw a person, later identified as Morton, firing shots in the middle of the street. They then saw the suspect fall several times while on the stairs of the Federal Building.
Police were able to subdue the suspect, who they disarmed and transported to the Roy Lester Schneider Regional Medical Center for treatment.
Emergency medical technicians on the scene told police it appeared the suspect was hallucinating, according to the report. Morton received abrasions to the right side of his face and to his hand.
Police confiscated a black handgun from the suspect, and Firearms Bureau records check showed the weapon was stolen in a robbery in April.
Morton was interviewed by Criminal Investigation detectives on Friday while still in the hospital. He was then arrested at about 2:30 p.m. and charged with illegal discharge of a firearm, reckless endangerment, destruction of property, damage to a vehicle, possession of ammunition, and possession of stolen property.
Bail was set at $113,000 bail, and Morton was remanded to the custody of the Bureau of Corrections.
