Education to Provide Tuition for Teachers, Paraprofessionals and Support Staff

The Virgin Islands Department of Education, in keeping with its commitment to provide professional development opportunities for its employees, advises the territory’s public school teachers, paraprofessionals and support staff, including administrators, that the department will pay 100 percent of tuition costs and associated fees for one, three-credit course at the University of the Virgin Islands for the fall 2009 semester. All courses offered to paraprofessionals will be at the undergraduate level, while courses offered to teachers and other non-teaching staff can be either at the graduate or undergraduate level.
The sign-up period will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., on Monday, July 20 through Monday, July 27. Interested teachers must enroll in courses leading to certification, while paraprofessionals must enroll in education courses or other courses leading to an education degree. Other non-teaching staff must enroll in a course related to duties they perform at the department. Individuals are further reminded that course textbooks are their sole responsibility and reimbursement to the department will be required in the event they fail a course.
Education Director of Human Resources Karen L. Blyden said, "Due to the limited number of available courses, interested individuals are asked to act quickly as the selections will be made on a first come, first serve basis. No phone sign-ups will be allowed. Visit our offices located at 1834 Kongens Gade for the St. Thomas-St. John District and the Vitraco Mall located at Orange Grove for the St. Croix District."
For more information, visit the department’s Division of Human Resources offices or call 772-3848, ext. 26, 32 or 34; or 774-0100, ext. 8052 or 8055.
