Allison Peter of St. Croix won her second silver medal Sunday at the International Association of Athletics Federation World Youth Championships in Italy, representing the Virgin Islands in the track-and-field competitions.
“Allison has demonstrated great sportsmanship and talent, as this was perhaps the most exciting race of the championships,” Gov. John deJongh Jr. said Monday, congratulating the athlete. “From all accounts, the race went down to the wire with Jodie Williams of Great Britain taking first place by only a narrow margin.”
Peter will begin her senior year at the St. Croix Educational Complex in the fall.
“Allison has represented the Virgin Islands well in becoming the first V.I. National Track and Field team member to win in a medal at the IAAF World Championship,” deJongh said. “Peter set V.I. National Junior records in both the 100- and 200-meter event, and her time in the 200 meter qualifies her for the IAA World Championships ‘B’ Standard for open competitors,” deJongh said.
And through her efforts, Peter made it possible for the V.I. flag to be raised in a track and field world championship for the first time ever, he said.
“The people of the Virgin Islands join me in extending congratulations to Ms. Peter, and I look forward to welcoming her back home,” deJongh said. “She has done us proud.”
