June 16, 2009 — Diageo, the multinational spirits company building a Captain Morgan's Rum distillery on St. Croix's south shore, is holding luncheons with non-profit organizations to communicate the company approach to sponsorships and events and its criteria and procedures for giving support.
Charitable donations are a part of the V.I. Economic Development Authority's tax break program, and Diageo will be a major recipient of those benefits. With plans to be up and running in 2010, the new $165 million Captain Morgan Rum distillery is projected to produce an estimated 20 million proof gallons of rum annually. It will employ about 40 and generate an estimated $100 million a year in new tax revenue for the Virgin Islands government.
The St. Croix luncheon briefing is Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at The Beach Side Café at Sand Castle on the Beach in Frederiksted. A second luncheon for St. Thomas and St. John non-profit organizations is scheduled Monday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Marriott Frenchmans Reef Beach Resort on St. Thomas.
As it has moved forward with construction of its planned Captain Morgan Rum distillery on St. Croix, Diageo USVI seeks to create community-outreach partnerships with local non-profit organizations to benefit the citizens of the Virgin Islands, said Dan Kirby, vice president of supply, Diageo USVI, in the company's announcement for the luncheons. These luncheons are designed to offer us an opportunity to become acquainted with the Territorys non-profit organizations and their needs as well as acquaint the organizations with Diageo USVIs approach to corporate citizenship.
Diageo USVI is the locally incorporated subsidiary of Diageo created to run the distillery.
Seating at the luncheons is limited. If a non-profit organization has not been contacted, please email dcmrvi@gmail.com to make your reservations.
