Man Shot Dead in Robbery

June 15, 2009 — Police on St. Thomas say a robbery Sunday ended in one man's death.
Officers responding to reports of shots fired found the body of 20-year-old Jamall Ashby near the garbage bins in Building 5 of the Tutu High Rise. It appeared Ashby sustained at least one gunshot wound to the upper body before losing control of the motorcycle he was driving, police said.
Ashby's friend had just been robbed, according to police. After the robbery, both men got on their motorcycles and were leaving the area when the suspects opened fire on them.
Ashby was struck and died on the scene. There is no word as to whether his friend, whose name was not released, sustained any injury.
Rodney F. Querrard Sr., St. Thomas/St. John/Water Island district chief, is asking for the public's help in solving the case.
"The untimely death of another 20-year-old male should have never occurred," he said. "It is bad enough that one of the two was robbed, but going to the point of taking a life? We as a community have to say 'enough is enough.'"
