I applaud the Lt. Governor’s effort to crack down on uninsured drivers in the territory. One thing that should be addressed as part of this is the absurd cost for insurance here in the territory. When I moved from Washington D.C. my insurance costs tripled. If we would make it easy for insurers like Erie, Progressive, Geico and Traveller’s to offer Virgin Islander’s their products the cost of insurance would drop significantly. This would lead to less un-insured drivers.
Also, because of the high cost of insurance here many only get $20,000 worth of coverage which I believe is the legal minimum in the territory. If you hit me and put me out of work for 6 months $20,000 won’t even begin to cover my losses. This is an unacceptably low limit that needs to be revised upwards for those who wish to use our roads. Combined with a less protectionist attitude towards outside insurance company’s operating in the territory, we can increase the limits to those that are standard in the mainland US ($300,000) for much lower prices than what Virgin Islander’s are paying now. This is beneficial to our entire society except for the select few that have gouged us for insurance over the years in the territory to their benefit but everyone else’s detriment.
