Virgin Islands Sailors Make Splash on College Circuit

June 7, 2009 — Virgin Islands sailors have been honored with All American selections and were in the thick of the action at the 2009 Collegiate National Championships earlier this month.
Thomas Barrows (Yale class of 2010) and Cy Thompson (Roger Williams University, 2011) were selected as collegiate All American sailors, and fellow Antilles School graduate Taylor Canfield (Boston College 2011) was given an honorable mention by the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association. This is the third year Barrows has been selected. Barrows was also one of three finalists for the 2009 ICSA Sailor of the Year selection.
The Collegiate National Championships were held in San Francisco June 1-3 and all of the Virgin Islanders sailed on their respective college teams. Barrows was especially mentioned in media coverage of the final day of the championships as he skippered Yale back into the lead in his final two races, before St. Mary’s College outperformed the second Yale boat to become the National Coed Sailing Champions. Yale finished second, Boston College fifth and Roger Williams sixth.
