June 4, 2009 Income tax refund checks recalled at the beginning of the month have been reissued and can be picked up at Bureau of Internal Revenue offices on all three islands beginning Friday.
Taxpayers are asked to bring photo identification with proof of their Social Security number in order to claim their reissued checks. Residents are also reminded to return their incorrect May 28 checks to the Bureaus offices if they havent already turned them in.
Taxpayers who have already negotiated the incorrect refund check are urged to contact the Bureau immediately to make arrangements for repayment. Those who have already cashed a check for an amount less than what was owed should also contact the Bureau for additional instructions. Questions can be directed to the Bureaus processing branch at: 715-1040, extension 4221 on St. Croix; extension 2257 on St. Thomas; and 777-1446 on St. John.
Finance Commissioner Angel Dawson and BIR Director-designee Claudette Watson-Anderson thanked taxpayers for their patience and understanding, and the local banks for their assistance, according to a recent Government House press release.
About 70 percent of the 4,663 refund checks paid out May 28 were unaffected by the recall.
