Brief: Don't Cash that IRB Refund Check

June 1, 2009 — If you have an income tax refund check dated May 28, don't cash it: The total is wrong. If you have already cashed it, call the V.I. Internal Revenue Bureau to straighten it out.
"Erroneous check totals were generated," said Finance Commissioner Angel Dawson Jr., according to a Government House alert issued Monday. Dawson ascribed the problem to "technical issues."
The government has ordered a stop payment on May 28 refund checks. Return the uncashed checks to the nearest Internal Revenue Bureau office.
"Taxpayers who have already cashed the checks bearing this issue date are asked to contact the bureau's offices immediately to determine the resolution in each particular case," said acting IRB director Claudette Watson-Anderson. "It is the bureau's goal to have these checks reissued and mailed to taxpayers no later than Friday."
