May 23, 2009 — TRAXCO has put together what looks to be a very exciting and competitive card for Sunday’s Memorial Day races.
Fifty-two thoroughbreds are scheduled to enter the starting gates on race day with 15 making their debut at the Randall "Doc" James Race Track.
The feature race of the day, “The Memorial Day Handicap," run at a distance of one mile for a purse of $5,000, will feature two of those debutantes in Soul Spirit and Lost River. Dashing Pirate of St. Thomas and the ever-improving Black Jack Bob, rounds out the field. While the word is still out on the two newcomers, they are expected to be of decent quality since they were supposedly brought in to challenge the Virgin island champion, Carse, who has been on a dominant seven-race unbeaten streak.
Black Jack Bob, a veteran campaigner at the St. Croix track, has found new form of late and has been no worse than second in his last three races. He will be expected to have a big say in the outcome of the race.
The Rock City entry, Dashing Pirate, is relatively new to the Virgin Islands racing scene but has shown a lot of promise and could go off as the slight morning line favorite.
