May 21, 2009 — The Public Services Commission will hold rate investigation hearings on all three islands concerning the V.I. Water and Power Authority's electrical and water rates during the first week in June.
They will be held June 1 at the Legislature building on St. John, June 2 at the PSC conference room at Barbel Plaza, St. Thomas, and June 3 at the V.I. Port Authority conference room at the Henry E. Rohlsen Airport on St. Croix. The time for all meetings is 6 p.m.
"It will set the water and power rates for the next five years," PSC spokesman Lorna Nichols said.
While water rates don't fluctuate during the five-year period, Nichols said that after the electric rates are set, the PSC allows them to go up or down based on the Levelized Electric Adjustment Clause, commonly called the LEAC. It is based on the price WAPA pays for oil.
While WAPA representatives get to speak first, Nichols said if time permits the public will be allowed to speak. She suggested that people send written comments before the hearing so they are read into the record in case there isn't sufficient time for the public to speak.
Written comments can be sent to the PSC's legal assistant, Michael S. Moore, or sent by e-mail. Comments can be faxed to 774-4871 on St. Thomas and St. John or 778-0352 on St. Croix.
