WAPA Launching GIS Project on St. Croix

May 20, 2009 — The V.I. Water and Power Authority is launching phase one of its Global Information System implementation project and will perform field inventories of its equipment from Gallows Bay to the eastern end of St. Croix.
Information from the inventory will be used to reduce line loss and improve WAPA's disaster recovery efforts by improving response time and allowing for customer information systems to be better managed, according to a recent news release. (See "Geographic Data System May Improve Utility Service.")
To start the project, WAPA needs customers to cooperate by allowing inventory technicians to access equipment located on their property. Technicians from Osmose Utilities Services will visit homes and businesses on Feeder 2 and will need access to poles, customer meters and other electrical devices to collect the data. Osmose technicians will use video cameras and other devices during the surveys, and can be recognized by their gold-colored shirts, which identifies them as WAPA employees.
Technicians will also wear WAPA badges and will have WAPA decals on their vehicles.
Once Feeder 2 is complete, equipment on Feeders 1,3, 4 and 6 will be surveyed.
Phase one of the project should be completed by October, according to WAPA. Questions about the St. Croix project can be directed to Arthur Burton, GIS project coordinator, at 773-2250, extension 3106.
