Self-Centered Citizen

Dear Source:
It’s amazing to me when people only take up a call to action when they themselves feel wronged in some way. The title of "Police Need to be More Active" caught my eye and curiosity so I read the letter. The more I read the more amazed I became.
Ok, it’s not good for anyone to get hit by a car. People get badly injured or even die from this, so it is not a good thing. I get it. But obviously the victim was uninjured enough to tussle with the driver.
Ok, here is my point. Everyone in the VI who reads the newspaper, listens to the local news or converses with fairly intelligent and community-minded individuals knows that the PD is undermanned and overworked. The crime on St. Thomas has tripled in recent years. Young people shoot their guns indiscriminately day and night. 14 people killed on St. Thomas in five months. Yet this person calls police “lackadaisical” because they did not rush, sirens blaring to the scene of an accident where one driver already left the scene and the victim “according to his own statement” is little worse for wear.
Did the “victim” ever consider that all available police may have been actively involved in other cases where people may have been getting shot, stabbed or assaulted? Is his consternation reserved only for events concerning his own personal welfare? Go to the police station and file a report like you were advised. Thank God you are able to go on your own power. Some people have not been so lucky.
Blessings.
